Jr's Room Midway Reveal

Back in October I redesigned my nephew's room. My sister and I were very optimistic that we could makeover his room in a week. By all means this was doable but when I arrived nothing was done. The walls were not primed and the carpet had not been replaced. I live a couple of states away so finishing his room was so critical because it would be a long time before I could come back. We did all the essentials but a few things remain before the room can officially be considered finished. Hence the title 'midway reveal.'

Before his room was dark, lacked his personality and his full sized bed took over the entire space. Jr wanted only a few things, you can find out more about the inspiration for this space and mood board here and here. We started by repairing his walls, priming and painting. This took literally forever. His walls were in really bad shape and will need to be replaced at some point. The budget didn't allow for this. So here is a before picture of his space:
We went with a very neutral wall color, Valspar Cliveden Sandstone 3007-10B.
My dad, my brother Ty and Dr.J installed the new carpet. My dad also put down new baseboards. The room was starting to shape up but it was now the end of the week and time was winding down.
We brought a bunk bed at first that would have been great for the space but it was too tall. I am so happy we measured one last time before setting the bed up.

We exchanged the bunk bed for a twin headboard. The price of the first bed paid for the new headboard, frame and mattress with box spring. Since we down sized his bed from a full to a twin, his room is much larger and he has room on the floor to put together puzzles and play.

Here is his finished room, oh midway finished room with commentary:
We purchased all new bedding, the ivory colored sheets and bed skirt came from Target. His new quilt is from Belks by Home Accents Pierce Collection. The curtains are from Ikea. I found that cute football pillow at Target. Can cute and football be used in the same sentence? :)

The curtains still have to be hemmed and I want to put some of those paper mache letters over top his bed to spell out Jr.
This is his desk area something that would not have fit in his room before. I love the vibrant green of the desk top and those legs are pretty cool. Everything you see in this photo is from Ikea except the map. He put crayons, pencils and markers in those nifty cups. The map is laminated so he can touch and even use a dry erase marker on it when he is doing homework. The map is a Rand McNally M series world wall map.
The bookcases are also from Ikea. I painted the back of bookcase Camo green C144 Valspar Signature paint. We installed the molding around the bookcases for it to appear built-in. Jr asked for me to include Spiderman, football, a place for him to display his action figures, and the color green. Success! I found that NFL canvas at Target, as well as the hamburger bank.

I still need to install a piece of molding to cover the seam in-between the bookcases and I also want to add a wood top on top of bookshelves in a walnut finish. More artwork and a wall clock would be nice in this corner of the room.

His room turned out fantastic and most importantly he loves it! And for your viewing pleasure, here is an before and after shot:
Aah much better, right?! We were going for an light and airy space that could grow with him. By adding some classic touches his room can evolve over time without having to change the entire space. Let me know how I did. And maybe come summer I can add those finishing touches when I visit. See ya soon.

    1. I love that built-in look, makes it seem custom. I really liked the shelves and I plan on putting the tall version of those in my daughters room. She wants a library feel to her room.
